blind 2024

Charcoal, oil on canvas hung from blinds railing.

180x180cm

Through this pair of projects I examine and break apart physical structures which dictate our relationships with one another. Blinds typically separate the public and private spheres. By including human motifs on these “blinds” I suggest a certain porosity in the divide between the personal and the collective. I sought to create a site-based, self-referential video project inspired by Nam June Paik, as well as by the paintings of Katharina Grosse. To experiment with this, I created a separate work with just charcoal and canvas, and then took a video of myself cutting up the two canvases, projecting this project on the charcoal canvas.
