Apparatus II 2025

Steel; neodymium magnets; acrylic panels; LEDs on aluminum heatsinks; servo motors; Arduino microcontroller; 20 AWG wires; WAGO connectors; bench PSUs; nuts; bolts; synthetic fabric; vectorized digital images; the Library of Congress website; Bitcoin.

Dimensions variable; here approx 220cm (H) x 350cm (W) x 60cm (D).

Apparatus II is a site-specific kinetic installation exploring the instability of the digital archive. Within this partially-obscured system, moving and stationary images come into conversation with one another, juxtaposed with a network of wires, frames, spokes, and lights, sometimes highlighting and sometimes obscuring the white annotations on the semi-translucent sheet. This mechanical process and the synthetic fabric which both captures and covers the apparatus create the perception of a unified dialogue out of a semi-clandestine constellation of disparate parts.

This iteration of Apparatus II (Here For Carla Hayden) responds to the Trump Administration’s politicized interventions in the Library of Congress. The images on the structure, like the modules of the structure itself, are interchangeable—fastened in the frames with nuts and bolts and secured to the structure with neodymium magnets.
